Remember sitting in a cinema watching the first twenty minutes of Saving Private Ryan for the first time? Band Of Brothers, manages to extend the effect over about nine hours or so. The result – as you would expect – is harrowing and draining, but extraordinarily effective and ultimately very moving.
Based on the true-life recollections of the members of E ‘Easy’ Company, the series is based on Stephen Ambrose’s best-selling account and as a result, is remarkable in that it is completely devoid of the usual war movie clichés. It has no plot as such, just a bunch of soldiers trying to survive the war. The result is relentless, bloody and genuinely frightening. Rarely on film has human life seemed so terrifyingly transient. Characters here vanish from the screen in an explosion of dirt, never to be seen again. There are no distracting romances, spy plots or incidental dramas here, this is purely ‘as is’ and subsequently, quite a hellish watch.
If this sounds off-putting, it shouldn’t. Production values and acting are exceptionally high, and the quality of the screenplays and direction are excellent throughout, gradually building characterisations until a sudden explosion (and they are sudden) kills off a character you’ve become unexpectedly attached to. Directors include Tom Hanks (That Thing You Do), David Leyland (Wish You Were Here), Phil Alden Robinson (Field of Dreams) and Richard Loncraine (Richard III), a diverse collection of talents, but the result is seamless. Spielberg himself takes a backseat as a producer, and while the debt to Saving Private Ryan is evident, this is ultimately the superior production.
