Wrong Turn Review
Gorehounds rejoice! It's been a barren time of late for the more bloodthirsty among us but with the arrival of 'Wrong Turn,' even the strongest appetite for gore should be utterly sated. Remarkably efficient and well and truly unpleasant, the tale follows six photogenic young things who definitely take the road less travelled and get themselves stranded in an American forest wilderness. But blow outs and car prangs soon turn out to be the least of their problems when they realise - wouldn't you just know it - that a trio of mutant, inbred and cannibalistic murderers are after them. Cue lots of large serrated knives, barbed wire, flying axes and lots and lots of the red stuff.
Although not a genre that floats my particular boat, the horror slasher flick has many, many fans who won't be too disappointed with this latest slice of hacked off human flesh. The brainchild of legendary Hollywood character effects Stan Winston - whose credits include 'Terminator 2' and 'Aliens' - it's unashamedly a movie in the 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' tradition where the exact nature of each gruesome offing obviously comes far higher up in the production's priority list than a well-worked out script. The film's 'big' name Eliza Dushku - aka Faith in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' - will, no doubt, attract the right male attention but comes across on screen as yet another bland victim-to-be. And while the baddies are even a tad laughable, the non-stop onslaught of horror and disgusting deaths should delight any true slasher-flick aficionado and keep other viewers away.
