Description
In his homeland of Alagaesia, a farm boy happens upon a dragon's egg - a discovery that leads him on a predestined journey where he realizes he's the one person who can defend his home against an evil king...
Eragon Review
Given the hugely successful film adaptation of another certain fantasy trilogy, it is perhaps unsurprising that film studios are picking similar novels to adapt to the big screen. "Eragon", the best selling first part of a new fantasy trilogy, is the latest of these novels to be selected. As the book was immensely popular amongst children, the film version is hoping to be a hit this holiday season, but does it succeed?
Alagaesia is a land ruled by evil King Galbatorix (John Malkovich). Once a land of dragon riders, Alagaesia's harmony was distorted by its King's tendency for megalomania and Alagaesia is now a land of darkness, where peasantry is high and the public must serve their duty to the king. When Eragon (Ed Speleers), an unsuspecting farmboy, happens upon a Dragon's egg that was stolen from the King by warrior princess Arya (Sienna Guillory), the path of his destiny awakens. Guided by former dragon rider Brom (Jeremy Irons), Eragon sets out on adventure to save the princess and restore peace to Alagaesia.
"Eragon" has a fine mix of both experience and youth in its cast and one would hope that the picture would feel solid in terms of performances. Unfortunately, the balance doesn't feel right and although Ed Speleers looks right for the lead role his debut performance is questionable. Similarly, debutant director and special effects guru Stefen Fangmeier is able to illustrate his skills in the CGI department but fails to bring much cohesion to each scene. However, one must remember this is essentially a film for boys and young teenagers so while the crossover appeal doesn't work for all fantasy fans, it's safe to assume that riding dragons and casting spells will be more than enough for "Eragon" to captivate younger crowds this Christmas.
