Description
In this film by the seasoned romantic-comedy director Donald Petrie (HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS, MYSTIC PIZZA), Lindsay Lohan plays Ashley, a sexy New York socialite who is known to be possessed of amazing luck. Wealthy men flock to her, designer clothes fall into her lap free of charge, and she has never struggled for a moment in her life. One night, at a masquerade party, she shares a dancefloor smooch with hunky Jake (Chris Pine), a charming fellow who has lost every coin toss of his life. As they kiss, the two somehow also swap destinies, and unlucky Jake is suddenly blessed with the charmed existence Ashley abruptly finds herself without. As Ashley finds herself falling into puddles, sitting in paint, rapidly falling off the corporate ladder, and being rejected by a long line of men, Jake begins to win money, get girls, and become a successful rock music manager. Ashley's luck, of course, is not bad enough that she stays out of Jake's path and, in the end, they both manage to win that lottery of love. In JUST MY LUCK--an old-fashioned film about love and destiny--Lindsay Lohan proves yet again why she is such a movie star. Like the starlets of years past, husky-voiced, sparkle-eyed Lohan has a magnetism that makes her deliciously present on the big screen. The charming leads are supported by a colourful, quirky cast that includes ENTOURAGE star Samaire Armstrong as Ashey's cynical single pal and Broadway great Tovah Feldshuh as the fortune teller who helps our protagonist understand her reversal of fortune.
Just My Luck Review
US baseball star Lefty Gomez once said that he'd rather be lucky than good - well in this fluffy flick Lindsay Lohan certainly has luck but can she shake off the teen shackles to play her first grown up romantic lead?
Lindsay plays Ashley Albright, a New Yorker who obviously fell out the lucky tree at birth and hit every gold plated branch on the way down. Everything seems to go her way, from a string of green lights in rush hour traffic to having Sarah Jessica Parker's new dress accidentally delivered just before a big date. But her good fortune takes a turn for the worse when she snogs born loser Jake (Chris Pine) as he inherits her winning streak. Soon Jake is riding the crest of a wave with the up-and-coming band he manages (McFly) while Ashley is seeing her perfect life come apart at the seams.
If Lohan wants to start being taken seriously as an actress then "Just My Luck" isn't really going to push her career on but for established fans it's bound to be entertaining enough. Bright and perky, the whole film feels like it's eaten a few too many E numbers and has gone a bit hyper as director Donald Petrie keeps the pace up and the intelligence down. Lohan is cutesy as Ashley as she flits from blessed to cursed while McFly certainly won't harm their profile across the pond as they try to channel The Beatles and The Monkees. But as for growing up? Well maybe Robert Altman's upcoming "A Prairie Home Companion" will earn Lindsay some credible acting spurs.
