All of Nina Simone's RCA albums in one handy, beautiful box
This is a must for Nina Simone fans. The acclaimed singer, songwriter, and pianist had her exquisite work for the Colpix and Philips labels anthologised before - with the 2003 box set "Four Women: The Complete Nina Simone on Philips" particularly enthralling - but the same honour had not been bestowed on her RCA output. Until now.
This "Complete RCA Albums Collection" brings together all nine of Simone's RCA recordings, dating between 1967 and 1974, into a neat, sturdy box. Each album is presented in a replica mini-LP CD card sleeve, so they look like little miniature versions of the original vinyl album. There is one catch-all booklet included with the set, which includes track information, recording dates, photos, and new liner notes. Most of the discs feature bonus tracks too and they differ from previously-released stand-alone versions of the albums.
Nina's work was incredibly diverse, so you might get vintage blues one moment ("Nina Simone Sings the Blues"), esoteric acoustic interpretations the next ("Nina Simone and Piano!"), syrupy adult-contemporary ("Here Comes the Sun"), and electrifying live performances ("Emergency Ward"). Among the highlights here is the glorious lo-fi live album "Black Gold" and the passionate soul of "Silk & Soul." At times maddening, at times gorgeous, but always unique and committed, these are strange, wonderful, enduring albums.
For the price, and for the convenience of having all of Nina Simone's RCA output in one place, you can't go wrong with this set. Recommended.
