Description
In this bright and happy film, set in a colourful make-believe world, Mike Myers (Austin Powers) plays the wily talking cat with plans to brighten up an otherwise very dull day for two lucky children. Sister and brother, Sally and Conrad, are forced to pass a rainy afternoon with their crotchety baby sitter Mrs. Kwan but the Cat In The Hat has other ideas. The mysterious Cat leads them on a series of illogical - and sometimes downright silly - misadventures. Meanwhile their mother (Kelly Preston), her paranoid boss (Sean Hayes), and her obnoxious boyfriend (Alec Baldwin), present obstacles that the children must overcome as they become part of the Cat's chaotic world. With sets coloured loud enough to pop off the screen and zany special effects and dazzling stunts that give the story a decidedly 21st century spin, this movie presents a fast-paced and very non-traditional rendering of the Dr. Seuss classic.
The Cat In The Hat Review
Mike Myers' take on Dr Seuss' famous children's tale arrives on our shores after the kind of critical drubbing every Hollywood actor dreads. So is it the "most unendurable Hollywood creation of the last dozen years" or, get this for a poster quote, "a vulgar, uninspired lump of poisoned eye candy?" Well, as loathe as I am to admit it, the American critics have a point. An utterly misguided project from start to finish, the weird, wonderful but entirely innocent world of Dr Seuss and his feline character has been filtered through Myers' one-cat show of smutty innuendoes and Austin Powers-style one-liners. And the audience for such a display? Dakota Fanning and Spencer Breslin's pint-sized kiddiewinks Conrad and Sally, left with a snoring babysitter while their single mum is busy at work.
And while the production design is eye-poppingly bizarre and Alec Baldwin, for one, delivers an outrageously committed performance as a sleazy neighbour eyeing up the kiddies' mum, you come out of the cinema feeling more than vaguely dirty. Erection 'jokes' - the famous hat at one point perks up when the cat opens the mother's portrait into a centrefold - competing with supposedly ironic comments on the commercial value of film's soundtrack does not, it's safe to say, a good children's film make.
