Description
Drew Latham is a wealthy marketing executive who is fed up with spending Christmas alone every year. But the Valco family - parents Tom and Christine, and their two kids Brian and Alicia - who live in Drew's old family home, have each other. When Drew's idea of spending Christmas in Fiji is turned down by his girlfriend, he decides to revisit his old neighbourhood in an attempt to muster up some feelings of seasonal cheer. The Valcos' life of suburban tranquillity is rudely interrupted when Drew turns up on their doorstep and offers them 250,000 U.S. Dollars if they'll let him stay with them over the holiday period. A lawyer swiftly draws up a contract, with the main stipulation stating the family must provide Drew with a sense of 'Yuletide glee.' What could be easier than that? Well, quite a lot it seems, as the unenthusiastic group is dragged through the seasonal mire by the demanding Drew. Eventually the tension turns to laughter, however, and family matters take a turn for the better as director Mike Mitchell ('Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo') brings 'Surviving Christmas' to a poignant close. With Tom and Christine patching up their marital problems by using Drew as a conduit for their troubles, and daughter Alicia developing a blossoming romance with the now-welcome house guest, Drew manages to inadvertently trigger the seasonal joy he'd been trying so hard to discover.
Surviving Christmas Review
You've got to wonder if Matt Damon even returns Ben Affleck's calls these days? It's only been six years since the pair we're picking up Oscars for writing "Good Will Hunting" but their careers can hardly be more different now. While Matt has gone stellar in films such as "The Bourne Identity" and "Ocean's Eleven", Ben has stumbled from turkey to turkey ("Bounce", "Pearl Harbor", "Gigli"). Can this festive adventure, which sees Ben's lonely advertising exec hire a family to keep him company over Christmas, help him achieve some carer parity with his best bud?
Quite simply no because this is a mess of the highest order. Aside from some terrible production values (I lost count of the amount of times the boom mic dropped into the shot), Affleck's character is possibly one of the most annoying to ever grace the silver screen. Ben's OTT performance will leave you wondering just how much coffee he had to drink each morning to get so hyper, meaning any sympathy you're meant to feel for the man is seriously undermined. The rest of the cast don't fare much better with James Gandolfini - who's hidden behind a bushy beard - and Catherine O'Hara given very little to play with as Ben's 'adopted' parents while we're seriously expected to believe that Christina Applegate reasonably sensible 'sister' would fall for Ben's out-of-control idiot in just a couple of days? Please…
"Surviving Christmas" is perhaps best summed up by a quote that comes towards the end of the movie as a character states "Yuletide's a bitch, ain't it?" Well it certainly will be if you have to watch this too often.
