Description

An invasion of slithery slug-like parasites from outer space arriving via meteorite in the redneck town of Wheelsy, South Carolina, where they turn most of the local yokels into flesh-eating zombies...

Having written for the jubilant trash-mongers at Troma Films before scripting 2004's well-received remake of Dawn Of The Dead, writer-director James Gunn crafted this hilarious splatter-fest as an homage to the comically violent horror films of the 1970s and 1980s, and he gets it just right with a low-budget look, perfect casting, grisly make-up effects and judicious use of CGI gore.

With laughs and gross-outs aplenty, Slither is the best horror comedy since Shaun Of The Dead!

Slither Review

It's been a while since anything as gloriously silly but wildly entertaining as "Slither" has come our way. A blend of bad taste horror, b-movie sci-fi and over the top comedy, the movie takes us to the red neck town of Wheelsy, South Carolina, where the highlight of the year is the annual 'Deer Cheer' hoe-down where the locals celebrate the chance to blow away some four-legged friends. But things in Wheelsy are about to take a turn for the bizarre when a local (Michael Rooker) stumbles upon a strange creature in the woods. One close encounter later and the parasite has taken over his body - and it's eager to breed, spread and eat anything meaty that comes to hand. Soon the town is overrun by possessed people munching on fellow locals, and it's up to local Chief Of Police Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion - "Serenity") and the womanof his dreams (Elizabeth Banks) to try and save the day.

It's fair to say that if movies such as "Shaun Of The Dead", "Tremors" and "Eight Legged Freaks" float your boat, then "Slither" is perfect for you. With its tongue placed firmly in its cheek, writer / director James Gunn has ditched the polished CGI effects most films use these days for slimy prosthetics and gallons of fake blood - and that works here because "Slither" is all about the tone rather than the finished product. That tone is actually very, very funny as Bill and co. try to take in what is happening around them without succumbing themselves. The final showdown is particularly unpleasant, but very satisfying.

Gloriously over the top, this screwball horror comedy is bound to become a cult classic, so get on board early and enjoy "Slither" now before everyone else starts talking about it.
