Description
At the beginning of August 1914 France, Germany, Russia and Great Britain
were engulfed in the First World War.
Concern for Germany`s growing militarism, Kaiser Wilhelm II`s obsession to match
Britain`s Navy and the existence of the long established French and German
war-plans only fuelled the air of instability in Europe. It was the
assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand that ignited the global conflict.
The first phase of war, known as the "Batlle of the Frontiers" included the
efforts of the British Expeditionary Force at Mons, the regrouping of the
British and French at Marne and the brilliant victory by the Germans at
Tannenberg.
The second phase "The Race for the Sea" saw both sides attempting to outflank
their enemies but each operation was thwarted.
By Christmas stalemate was reached and trench warfare characterised the conflict
on the Western Front.
