Description
This biopic follows Beatrix Potter's rise to being the most successful children's author of all time. Despite delighting generations of children with her books, she kept her own story locked carefully away. The film reveals how she developed her artistic and story-telling abilities from a young age and rebelled against the conventions of the time by refusing to marry for the sake of it. Her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, was a publishing phenomenon and led to a captivating romance with her publisher Norman Warne.
Miss Potter Review
Having proved she does an English accent almost as well as Gywneth Palthrow, Renee Zellweger once again becomes a honourary Brit for this biopic of popular children's author Beatrix Potter. Zellweger takes on the role of the shy Victorian woman behind such firm family favourites as "The Tale Of Peter Rabbit", "The Tale Of Mrs Tiggywinkle" and "The Tale Of Jemima Puddleduck". But where "Miss Potter" succeeds is in its ability to show us a side to Beatrix's life few know anything about, including her love for her publisher Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor) and her willingness to buck convention during a very conventional time.
Directed by Chris Noonan ("Babe"), "Miss Potter" is sure to find a place in the heart of anyone with a soft spot for Potter's creations. Most of the major characters are all given screen time as playful animations take us inside Beatrix's imagination where Peter, Jemima and co. are all very much alive. Throw in some amazing views of the Beatrix's beloved Lake District and this is one mighty fine looking movie.
Noonan meanwhile creates the whole stuffy Victorian thing well with Barbara Flynn perfectly playing up to it all as Beatrix's snooty mother. However the trio of Zellweger, McGregor and Emily Watson as Norman's spirited sister act as the perfect balance, bringing fun and vibrancy to a very stiff and formal era. However be warned - you may find McGregor's impressive 'tache rather distracting.
