Description
The acclaimed illusionist Eisenheim (Edward Norton) has not only captured the imaginations of all of Vienna, but also the interest of the ambitious Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell). But when Leopold's new fiancée (Jessica Biel) rekindles a childhood fascination with Eisenheim, the Prince's interest evolves into obsession...and suddenly the city's Chief Inspector (Paul Giamatti) finds himself investigating a shocking crime. But even as the Inspector engages him in a dramatic challenge of wills, Eisenheim prepares for his most impressive illusion yet.
The Illusionist Review
Late last year we were plunged into a world of magic and showmanship in turn-of-the-century London in "The Prestige". Well now we visit a similar period in "The Illusionist", except this time the action takes place in Vienna. The movie stars Edward Norton as Eisenheim, an acclaimed magician who's causing trouble for the Crown Prince (Rufus Sewell) by seeming to raise the spirits of the dead as part of his show. We won't go into too much detail about why this is causing problems for the Prince but suffice to say he is concerned enough to unleash his pet detective (Paul Giamatti) to try and shut the magic man down.
Impressively shot, perhaps the best thing about "The Illusionist" is the fact the writer / director Neil Burger doesn't ever really explain how Eisenheim manages to do what he does. Is he a real mystic or are his shows the ultimate illusion? That's for you to decide. But what is undeniable is the power of Norton in the lead role. His on-screen intensity is perfect for a character who finds himself in a position where the words 'dark' and 'brooding' are key. Giamatti, Sewell and Jessica Biel provide able support.
Having filmed largely in the Czech Republic, Burger is able to construct a believable Vienna while Dick Pope's Oscar-nominated cinematography creates a palpable atmosphere. Some may be slightly put off by the final few twists and turns but "The Illusionist" is still a more than enjoyable sleight of hand.
