Description
Oscar-winning director Hayao Miyazaki, Japan's premier animator and
co-founder of Studio Ghibli, takes viewers on an amazing animated adventure that
celebrates the power of love to transform and the resiliency of the human spirit
in the face of adversity.
Sophie, an ordinarily average teenage girl working in a hat shop, finds her life
thrown into turmoil when she is literally swept off her feet by a handsome but
mysterious wizard named Howl and is subsequently turned into a 90 year old woman
by the vain and conniving Wicked Witch of the Waste. Embarking on an incredible
odyssey to lift the curse, she finds refuge in Howl's magical moving castle
where she becomes acquainted with Markl, Howl's apprentice, and a hot-headed
fire demon named Calcifer. Sophie's love and support comes to have a major
impact on Howl, who flies in the face of orders from the palace to become a pawn
of war and instead risks his life to help bring peace to the kingdom...
Extraordinary characters, inventive imagery and stunning hand-drawn cel frame
artistry make this latest masterpiece from the visionary Miyazaki an
unforgettable experience!
Howl's Moving Castle Review
In an age of 3-D computer imagery and cutting edge special effects, it's bizarre to think that one can get such pleasure from simple, hand drawn animation any more. But "Spirited Away" director Hayao Miyazaki has proved before that he's a master at this kind of thing and "Howl's Moving Castle" is another masterpiece.
The plot, as we've come to expect, is pretty out there and centres on Sophie, a young woman who after a run-in with a mysterious wizard is cursed by the wicked Witch of the Waste. The spell turns Sophie into a 90-year-old woman so she packs her things and flees but soon finds herself holed up with "Howl's Moving Castle", the wandering home of a famous but feared wizard.
It's strange to think that this is the first time Miyazaki has made a film from someone else's material - it's based on Diana Wynne Jones' novel - but he has made "Howl's Moving Castle" his own. Full of visual flourishes and deep characterisation, this is a pure joy to watch as Miyazaki lets his imagination run riot in a fantasy land where magic and industry share an uncomfortable co-existence. His surreal collection of supporting characters, including a wise-cracking fire demon and a turnip-headed scarecrow, are well constructed and realised and while some may be put off by the two-hour running time, it's 119 minutes of sheer joy for fans.
And it says a lot about the draw of Miyazaki that Hollywood stars such as Christian Bale, Billy Crystal, Jean Simmons, Lauren Bacall and Emily Mortimer have lent their voices to the English language version of the film.
