Description

Queen Latifah is absolutely delightful in Wayne Wangs romantic comedy, LAST HOLIDAY. Latifah stars as Georgia Byrd, a reserved plus-sized woman who lives a dreary, ordinary life in pre-Katrina New Orleans, where she dreams of an elegant existence filled with fancy food, stylish clothing, and high-society parties. But she spends most of her evenings eating frozen dinners all alone, often thinking about a shy coworker (LL Cool J) she has a crush on. When she is suddenly diagnosed with a terminal illness and given three weeks to live, she collects her savings and decides to go crazy, doing all those things she would never allow herself to do before. She heads for one of the worlds ritziest hotels, the Grand Hotel Pupp in Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic, where she takes advantage of every luxury she can, from spa treatments to downhill ski runs to helicopter trips to designer shopping excursions. While her lavish appetite is admired by a gourmet chef (Gerard Depardieu, showing agile comic skill), she is deemed a potential threat by a corporate bigwig (a slick Timothy Hutton). Shes also none too happy to find her too-smooth senator (Giancarlo Esposito) enjoying a lush vacation instead of serving his community. Latifah simply lights up the screen in a somewhat different version of the role played by Alec Guinness in Henry Casss 1950 original. This version of LAST HOLIDAY has been updated with a playful pop soundtrack, Geoffrey Simpsons beautiful photography, William Arnolds bright and colourful production design, and an enjoyable, light-hearted pace from director Wang (DIM SUM, THE JOY LUCK CLUB, and MAID IN MANHATTAN).

Last Holiday Review

Based on the 1950 Alec Guinness comedy of the same name, director Wayne Wang's update sees Queen Latifah living it up in the lap of Czech luxury after she's told she only has a few weeks left to live. Latifah plays Georgia Byrd, a New Orleans cookware saleswoman who brings a whole new meaning to the word cautious. She won't eat the food she lovingly prepares in case she puts on a few pounds and is too shy to tell colleague Sean (LL Cool J) about the torch she holds for him. But when a brain scan reveals an inoperable and deadly condition, Georgia throws caution to the wind, quits her job, cashes in her savings and decides to spend her final weeks in the grand Hotel Pupp in the Czech Republic. There she meets a chef (Gerard Depardieu) she idolises and the arrogant owner (Timothy Hutton) of the store she worked in while embracing every second of the life she has left.

It would be very easy to write "Last Holiday" off without a second thought and there's no argument that it's not a patch on the original Ealing comedy. But Queen Latifah is such a charming and easy going actress that there are certainly worse ways to spend 100 minutes of your life. Filmed in the sumptuous surroundings of Karlovy Vary (home to the annual Film Festival), Wang has certainly made the area look like an appealing place to visit as Georgia blows her cash in the spa, rules the slopes on a snowboard and discovers the joys of base jumping. Oh and finally tucks into some quality grub courtesy of Depardieu's OTT gourmet, all of is which is jolly life-affirming and should bring a smile to your face as will the inevitably schmaltzy but happy ending.
