Description
Two extremely skilled professional assassins have managed to stay married for five years without ever realising each other's profession because they work for rival agencies and the work is top secret. When their paths eventually cross on a high-level hit, one of the most lethal battles of the sexes in the history of cinema is officially on.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith Review
Sometimes Hollywood studios pair up huge stars in the hope that their duel pulling power will wow audiences while the actual film in which they're starring becomes a bit of an afterthought. Unfortunately that's definitely the case with "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", the first installment of a potentially money-spinning franchise that suffers from a wildly unbalanced script.
The movie stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as your run-of-the-mill, suburban married couple whose relationship has become staid to say the least. But what they don't know is that each of them is hiding a lethal secret - they're both assassins who spend their time offing their marks while their spouse thinks they're earning a crust at the office. Eventually though their duel lives catch up with them and soon Mr. & Mrs. Smith are looking down the barrels of each others veritable arsenal of weapons.
There's absolutely no doubt that people will go and see "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" in their droves and, given that Pitt and Jolie spend much of their time running around in very few clothes, the vast majority won't be disappointed. Certainly the first hour or so is very enjoyable as the pair play a cat and mouse game in both their personal and professional relationship. But then comes a twist and the last half and hour becomes an ill-judged mish-mash of shoot-outs and car chases that don't seem to make much sense. There are also some rather questionable moral issues the film tries to make light of as the body count rises and the two leads spend one scene beating the hell out of each other. Maybe spousal abuse is ok if you're a gun for hire?
The Saturday night multiplex crowd will whoop and holler as people get shot, things get blown up and Pitt and Jolie steam up the screen - they do share a palpable chemistry - but ultimately any proposed sequel could do with a great deal of marriage counseling if this relationship is to work long-term.
